Depending on your circumstances, you may qualify to receive a Disability Support Pension (DSP) from the Australian government. Typically, you must be a permanent resident of Australia or have lived in Australia for a minimum of five years. The system considers your current income and assets to determine eligibility.
The number of people receiving DSP varies. In 2013-14, there were 2840 recipients. This is about four per cent of the total number of grants. Of these, most had undertaken a program of support. However, 3309 did not complete the program. As a result, the rate of DSP for those with disabilities needs to be raise in order to provide a dignified standard of living.
To apply for a disability pension, you must submit supporting documents. Some of these are mandatory, while others may be optional. The application form will specify which documents needed. You can also submit supplementary documents up to 14 days after you make your claim. These supplementary documents not require to submit in person, but they can help you prove your eligibility.
You can get more information about the DSP system by visiting the Department of Social Services. The website provides statistics on the number of recipients and other useful information.
